This is where most of the weight of the door is pushing against. Often, you will see that the door on the hinge side is tighter against the frame at the bottom of the door. It should be about an eighth of an inch and be consistent. This gap occurs between the door and the frame or jamb. There should be an even gap across the top and down the latch side. Sometime the door jamb itself may be damaged. Once you figure out which direction the strike plate needs to be adjusted to, you can remove the strike plate, and use the chisel to remove wood from the jamb as needed. First you need to determine whether the strike plate needs to be adjusted up or down, and this can be accomplished by marking where the latch meets the strike plate. In order to do this, you will need a sharp wood chisel in order to remove wood material from the door jamb. If the door latch is not seating into the strike plate, the strike plate itself may need to be adjusted. Determining how many cards you need to use will require observing the gap between the door latch and strike plate when the door is closed. In many cases, shimming less than an 1/8th of an inch is all you need, and finding a wood shim that thin could be challenging. Since playing cards are thin, but can be stacked to create a thicker shim, they are a more versatile option. Some people will use thin wood shims, but a more convenient material that is likely sitting around the house is playing cards. If you need to install shims behind the door hinges, you will need to find a thin material that can be cut to size to fit into the recess in the door jamb behind the hinges. If the door edge is close to the door jamb (on the strike plate side, and the latch does not fit into the strike plate opening, adjustment of the strike plate itself is likely the repair that will work the best. If when you close the door, the latch fails to seat within the strike plate, and there is a large gap between the door edge and door jamb (on the strike plate side), the use of shims installed behind the hinges is likely the preferred repair.
